RUN

Old School Freight Train

In 2005, Acoustic Disc announced the arrival of Old School Freight Train with their exciting debut recording, Run. This dynamic young band from Charlottesville, Virginia, created an innovative style in the world of contemporary bluegrass music — combining thought-provoking lyrics, captivating melodies, soulful vocals, virtuosic instrumentals and imaginative arrangements.

Run showcases the distinctly smooth vocals and songwriting talent of guitarist Jesse Harper, the ecstatic mandolin stylings of Pete Frostic, Ben Krakauer's jazzy 5-string banjo finesse, the poetic fiddling of Nate Leath and the backbone upright bass of Darrell Muller. Its 12 tracks span a broad spectrum of styles. The pop-driven title track features a rolling groove and inspired solos. Harper’s introspective vocals shine on "Drama Queen," "Broken Pieces" and "Dance." R&B meets old-time music with an infectious take on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and their rendition of the Randy Newman classic "Louisiana 1927" is captivating. "Henry Brown" and the rapid fire "Lookee Here” will appeal to bluegrass lovers. On the instrumental side, the band struts their stuff with an exotic "Tango Chutney," a celtic-flavored anthem "Mr. Parshif's Jig," "Trick Dog," a mando-cello tour de force and "Euridice," a sultry bossa featuring producer Grisman on mandolin and Joe Craven of the DGQ on percussion.

Run was produced by David Grisman who said, "After 40 years of recording acoustic music, it's not very often that a new band catches, and keeps, my attention. Old School Freight Train has done that and more.” Run is an acoustic work of the highest order, embracing both sophistication and accessibility. You're destined to like it.
