1940s D’Angelico Artist Scroll Mandolin
This ultra-rare mandolin was made by John D’Angelico during World War II for Ermine Marino, whose name is engraved in a pearl block at the 14th fret. It is patterned after a Gibson F-5 with 12 frets to the body, with 5-ply binding. It is in excellent original condition, with natural blonde finish, ebony fretboard with pearl block inlays and a highly flamed one-piece maple back. The headstock is a typical fancy D’Angelico style with the filial. I have only heard of one other D’Angelico mandolin built in this style. The neck is straight and the sound is rich with considerable volume. It comes with its original custom oblong, leather covered Lifton case and letters of provenance.
