DGQ
David Grisman’s bands in their various Quintet, Quartet and Sextet configurations, have showcased his original “dawg” compositions ever since he founded the DGQ in the fall of 1975. That band featured David on mandolin, Tony Rice on guitar, Darol Anger on fiddle, Todd Phillips on mandolin and Joseph Carroll on bass. Since then, the DGQ has been the leading force in establishing this new genre of instrumental acoustic string music. Grisman’s bands have influenced several generations of acoustic musicians like banjo phenomenon Bela Fleck and master dobroist Jerry Douglas among many others.
Through the years, the DGQ has been a breeding ground for new acoustic talent. Band alumni include some brilliant musicians —guitarists Tony Rice, Frank Vignola, Jon Sholle, Dimitri Vandellos, John Carlini, Rick Montgomery, Enrique Coria and Grant Gordy; fiddlers Darol Anger, Matt Glaser and Jim Buchanan; multi-instrumentalists Mike Marshall and Mark O’Connor; and bassists Joseph Carroll, Bill Amatneek, Todd Phillips and Rob Wasserman.
Most recently, David expanded the group to a Sextet featuring Jim Kerwin on bass, George Marsh on percussion, Matt Eakle on flute, Chad Manning on fiddle, George Cole on guitar and the Dawg himself on mandolin.
