LIVE AT GRASS VALLEY

David Grisman & the Rounder Album Band

In November, 1975, David Grisman assembled a stellar cast of bluegrass characters to record his first LP for Rounder Records. The band included guitarist Tony Rice and bassist Todd Phillips of David’s newly-formed Quintet, and fellow Dawg collaborators and alumni of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys — banjo innovator Bill Keith and the legendary fiddler Vassar Clements. Joining them was a teenaged bluegrass prodigy, dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas.

Although these musicians would play together in concerts and sessions, it wasn’t until July 30, 1989 when they would appear, for the first and only time (with bassist Mark Schatz), as David’s Rounder Album Band at the Grass Valley Bluegrass festival in California. The music they played that afternoon was powerful, vibrant and inspired. Thirty-five years later, we’re proud to present this bluegrass gem from the Dawg Archives.
