ODDBALL 8-STRINGS VOLUME 1

David Grisman

Being an “oddball” myself, my passion for mandolin playing and the instruments themselves, coupled with extensive traveling over the course of more than half a century, has enabled me to acquire some amazingly unusual, and often unique, 8-string “tools of the trade.” In 2017, while “dB” Dave Dennison was setting up microphones in our living room to record an album of duets with guitar phenomenon Tommy Emmanuel, I decided to hear what some of these antiques sounded like and also threw in some commentary about them.

About a year ago, I discovered these recordings and decided to make (many) more of them with the help of master sound engineer, Neville Pearsall. I decided to organize them chronologically and so here, dear fellow mando-maniacs, I now offer this first volume of Oddball 8-Strings, all built in the first 20 years of the last century. I hope you enjoy checking out the tones! — David “Dawg” Grisman, April, 2026
