ITALIAN MANDOLIN & BANJO CLASSICS

Giovanni Gioviale

One of the few great Italian string masters whose playing has been preserved on recordings is Giovanni Gioviale, a brilliant virtuoso on both mandolin and tenor banjo. Born in Catania, Sicily, Gioviale moved to New York City in 1929, where he lived for three years and (fortunately) recorded many sides for large and small record companies.

Gioviale was a prolific composer and this set contains many of his greatest pieces such as "Costumi Siciliani" and "Idilio Primavera" which were covered by Carlo Aonzo, Beppe Gambetta and David Grisman on their tribute to the Italian migration, Traversata (Acoustic Disc ACD-47). This collection was compiled by expert musicologist David Soffa.
