Roscoe Holcomb

Roscoe Holcomb, from Daisy, Kentucky, was a coal miner, construction worker and farmer for most of his life (1912-81). He was also an incredible singer, banjo and guitar player, who was discovered and recorded by folklorist John Cohen, of the New Lost City Ramblers, in 1958. His music first appeared on the classic Folkways LP, Mountain Music of Kentucky, produced by Cohen and released in 1960. His now legendary status was attained through concerts and recordings throughout the 1960s-70s, and in 1968, Eric Clapton told Rolling Stone magazine that Roscoe was his favorite country musician!

As Danny Barnes says in his insightful notes to this project, “Like them heads on Easter Island, Roscoe’s music is like the ruins of an ancient civilization, and by listening for a time, we can go there.” This compelling live performance, recorded by Jonathan Biltchik at the Washington Square Methodist Church in 1972, is the only full-length concert release by Mr. Holcomb. It was mastered in the high-definition (24 bit, 96 khz) format, affording listeners the unique opportunity to enjoy this music in a sonically superior format.
