PORTRAIT OF AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL

Rudy Cipolla

An artistic tribute to San Francisco’s legendary mandolinist/composer Rudy Cipolla, featuring his unique compositions and arrangements. Rudy was born in 1900 in Calabria, Italy and migrated to the USA when he was 8 years old. He played mandolin with the Rybka’s Orchestra in Portland and mandocello with the Argentine Trio in San Francisco on NBC radio after moving there in 1931. He started composing at the age of 57 and made his first LP (produced by David Grisman) at the age of 83. This project was completed in 1995 and Rudy passed away in 2000, at the age of 99.

Portrait of an American Original, released in Rudy’s 95th year, is a collection of his compositions interpreted by The David Grisman Quintet, The Modern Mandolin Quartet, Evan Marshall, Radim Zenkl, and The Rudy Cipolla Ensemble. The project also features Rudy's music from the soundtrack of the 20th Century-Fox film Capone, and his first recordings on mandocello from an original 1937 radio broadcast. Also included is a 20-page pdf booklet of biographical notes with rare photos and commentary from the artists.
