Tone Poets is a companion piece to the highly acclaimed Tone Poems series, exploring the singular relationship between musician and instrument.
Episode 44: The Gasoline Brothers & The New Smokey Grass Boys
Dawg & Danny discuss two Acoustic Oasis releases featuring guitar legend Tony Rice and David Grisman playing traditional bluegrass in the 1970s. The Gasoline Brothers showcases living room recordings of Tony’s stellar guitar & vocals with David’s mandolin, accompanied by bassist Todd Phillips and banjoist extraordinaire Steve Arkin, as well as tracks with Todd, banjo legend Bill Keith and fiddler Richard Greene, recorded in Japan. The New Smokey Grass Boys is a living room session of red-hot bluegrass instrumentals by Dawg & ’T’ with Todd Phillips (bass), Darol Anger (fiddle) and Robert Bowden (banjo).
Episode 43: Blues for a Gypsy & Frank’N’Dawg – Melody Monsters
Dawg & Danny discuss two Acoustic Disc releases featuring guitar virtuoso Frank Vignola. Blues for a Gypsy showcases Frank’s masterful abilities playing solo and puts a unique gypsy jazz spin on a variety of styles from Bach to the Blues. David Grisman joins Frank on Melody Monsters, in a program of duo arrangements of classic melodies from the Great American Songbook, including tunes by Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rodgers and others.

Episode 40: Jethro Burns & Tiny Moore – Back to Back
Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Back to Back, the Acoustic Disc project featuring the masters of mandolin jazz, Jethro Burns and Tiny Moore, originally produced on LP for Kaleidoscope Records in 1979 by David Grisman. This episode tells the story of this historic meeting of two mandolin geniuses and the sessions that included three other legendary musicians, bassist Ray Brown, drummer Shelly Manne and guitarist/arranger Eldon Shamblin, with guest appearances by the Dawg himself.
Introductory Episode: Ralph Rinzler – Dawg’s Guru
Dawg & Danny discuss Ralph Rinzler, David Grisman’s guru. Ralph was an amazing musician, folklorist and neighbor who mentored David during his formative years in Passaic, NJ. Included are tracks featuring Ralph’s mandolin playing that inspired Dawg, and their only recording together on Grisman’s Life of Sorrow.
