Episode 53: Hold On, We’re Strummin’
Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Hold On, We’re Strummin’, featuring mandolin monsters Sam Bush & David Grisman. Close friends since 1965 when Grisman placed his Lloyd Loar F-5 mandolin into 13-year old Bush’s hands, this most dynamic string duo has created an acoustic tour de force. This historic release features 11 Sam & David originals, showcasing the psychic interplay and stylistic fluidity that have permeated their stellar careers.
Episode 52: Old & in the Gray
Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Old & in the Gray, the 2002 recording that reunites Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements and David Grisman from the original bluegrass boundary-breakers, Old & In the Way. These three legendary bluegrass musicians called upon veteran banjo player and vocalist supreme Herb Pedersen to fill the slot left vacant by the late Jerry Garcia. They are joined by bassist extraordinaire Bryn Bright (Davies).This 2002 Acoustic Disc release features an eclectic blend of old and new bluegrass sounds.

Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Livin’ With the Blues Deluxe Edition, fiddle giant Vassar Clements’ last recording project that Dawg produced with Norton Buffalo. Vassar Clements’ fiddle playing has always been steeped in the blues, and this recording teams him up with blues heroes Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Maria Muldaur, Roy Rogers, David Jacob-Strain, Marc Silber and others in a variety of tunes from Skip James to Bessie Smith and Booker T & the MGs.
Episode 50: The Original David Grisman Quintet – First Recordings – Live in Dawg’s Living Room
To mark their 50th podcast, Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from The Original David Grisman Quintet – First Recordings, recorded in Dawg’s living room, 50 years ago! This tape from the Dawg Archives, was originally made as a demo of this ground-breaking ensemble with David Grisman and Todd Phillips (mandolins), Tony Rice (guitar), Darol Anger (violin) and Joe Carroll (bass), playing tunes which have now become “dawg classics.”
Episode 49: Dawg Plays Big Mon
Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Dawg Plays Big Mon, David Grisman’s tribute to Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music. This collection, released on Acoustic Disc in 2004 includes recordings of Bill Monroe material that David recorded with John Hartford, Mike Seeger, Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice, Doc Watson and many others.
Episode 48: Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys – Live at Mechanics Hall
Dawg & Danny discuss and listen to selections from Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys – Live at Mechanics Hall. This classic performance, recorded in 1963 by David Grisman, features the father of bluegrass with the revolutionary banjo playing of Bill Keith, the high lonesome singing of guitarist Del McCoury, the fine fiddling of bluegrass veteran Joe Stuart and the solid bass playing of Bessie Lee Mauldin. Live at Mechanics Hall presents songs never released by this configuration, including two vocals by Bill’s daughter Melissa, and the only recorded Monroe duet with Bea Lilly of the Lilly Brothers, who also appeared on the show.
Introductory Episode: Ralph Rinzler – Dawg’s Guru
Dawg & Danny discuss Ralph Rinzler, David Grisman’s guru. Ralph was an amazing musician, folklorist and neighbor who mentored David during his formative years in Passaic, NJ. Included are tracks featuring Ralph’s mandolin playing that inspired Dawg, and their only recording together on Grisman’s Life of Sorrow.
