THE SILVER-BELLE SESSION

Frank Wakefield

In early 1965 Peter K. Siegel and David Grisman started a bluegrass record label which they called Silver-Belle Records. They had already produced a Red Allen and Frank Wakefield session for Folkways in 1963 after recording them in Frank’s kitchen, released as The Kitchen Tapes on Acoustic Disc in 1994.

After Red and Frank parted ways in 1964. Peter and David arranged a session in New York to record six tracks featuring Frank singing and playing with the great Chubby Wise on fiddle, along with New York Ramblers Winnie Winston on banjo, Fred Weisz on bass and David on guitar “I’ll Never Make You Blue” and “The Convict and the Child” were released on a Silver-Belle 45 single. Now 60 years later, we are proud to share the entire session, as vibrant and exciting as the day it was recorded.
