This live recording captures the legendary John Hartford in an amazing solo performance recorded in Cotati, California on June 21,1983. This “one man band” concert showcases a myriad of John’s talents. His fiddling is rich with many influences and his 5-string banjo playing combines warp-speed Scruggs picking with sophisticated accompaniments, both lyrical and comical.
Of course there are the songs (traditional, contemporary and 14 originals) sung by that steadfast voice, like your best friend or favorite book, singing and speaking to just you. John’s guitar playing is informed by jazz harmonies and bluegrass flat-picking and to top (and bottom) it all off, his happy feet are clogging on the famed amplified plywood platform, providing the perfect groove for 26 tunes and songs, played with the sensitivity, artistry and wild abandon that only John Hartford could summon.
